What is a Spiralizer

What Is A Spiralizer?

A Spiralizer is a kitchen tool used to cut vegetables, but unlike a mandoline it cut the vegetables into thin spirals. You can use a Spiralizer to make spirals out of your vegetables or fruits, but it does not work with every type of vegetables or fruits. It works best with firm vegetables or fruit. The most common vegetables and fruits people like to spiralize are zucchinis, potatoes, carrots, apples, squash, brocoli, radish, cauliflower, cucumber, beet, eggplant.

A spiralizer is a great tool to get new and healthier food habits. It is very simple and quick to use. It is a gadget that is also easy to clean.

This is the Paderno Spiralizer, the most sold world wide:

How to use a spiralizer

There are different models on the market, but usually they all work the same. You put the type of blade you want to use in the place designed for it. You put the vegetable in the right place, usually there will be some needles where you can stick your vegetable so it hold tight. Then you start turning the handle and/or you press gently behind the vegetable as the spirals appears.

It is easier with firm food as softer fruits or vegetables will tear off easily when in spirals.

There are plenty of Spiralizer available in the Market.

Why Using a Spiralizer

You can use a spiralizer to add a new twist to your recipe. It is a new way to cut your vegetables and sometime a little change is nice.

You  can replace spaghetti with spiralized vegetables, which is better for your health and lower in calories. This is one of the greatest advantage of a spiralizer, you can transform a delicious, but also very high in calories spaghetti meal into of a delicious  and bowl of vegetables and healthy sauce on top

Just so you understand the power of a vegetable spiralizer to lose weight, I will compare a portion of normal spaghetti with a portion of spiralized zucchini.

Here is the nutrition facts for a popular brand of spaghetti. For only 2 ounces we have 200 calories. 2 ounces is only 1/7 of the box. I do not know for you, but it is not rare that I eat like at a third of the box. What would make around 500 calories.

Now let's compare this with a zucchini.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, there are 17 calories in 100 g of zucchini. If we report it to the same size of the spaghetti, 2 ounces (56 g) it makes only 10 calories. 20 times less than with the spaghetti for the exact same quantity. This is insane when you think about it. When I was eating a third of a spaghetti box, I ate 500 calories. When I replace spaghetti with zucchini, it make only 25 calories! That's 475 calories less.

It is true that to be healthier you need to eat better...
475 calories is not even the amount of calories I burn when I run intensly half an hour on a treadmill, can you imagine?

A spiralizer can definitely help you lose weight, especially if you know great recipes to cook with it.
